According to Rob Bishop, freelance Villa programme writer and former writer of for the Birmingham Post, Birmingham Mail, and Express and Star – Villa had the exact same result thirty years ago to this day.

Not against Bristol City – but they had a rout in front of goal and managed to win 5-0. The same year, they managed to gain promotion.

Is this a sign of things to come? We certainly hope so.

With two wins on the bounce against promotion rivals Bristol City and Middlesbrough, we find ourselves back in the play-offs and starting 2018 off with fireworks.

We’re now only five points behind Derby County in second, but two points away from falling out of the play-offs once more.

This year has to be one of the most hotly contested in terms of promotion, with a possible ten teams in contention for both an automatic or play-off spot.

Wolves are flying high at the moment and look impossible to catch at the head of the table, but if Villa continue with performances like today’s against Bristol City – who still sit just above us in the table – there’s no reason why we can’t make the second spot our own.

Let’s hope that we are able to kick on after a disastrous December, and maybe we’ll be celebrating like Villa fans were thirty years ago.
