Another January day, another player linked to Aston Villa.

Yesterday, after the Villans suffered a three-nil drubbing at Villa Park at the hands of Swansea City, Aston Villa were linked with a loan move for Leicester City’s Christian Fuchs, according to The Mirror.

This sounds like a move with potential, but with Leicester City expecting Aston Villa to pay the full amount of his £60,000 a week contract, there has to be cheaper options.

This morning, the news out of Aston is that Aston Villa are one of a number of clubs interested in Bulgarian international Kiril Despodov, according to The Birmingham Mail.

Kiril Despodov is rated in Bulgaria and within the last two years has risen through their international youth system to become a fully fledged senior international in the last two years.

At 22, Despodov has played his entire career in Bulgaria but has set the Parva Liga alight this season with eight goals and seven assists in 16 games so far this season.

Primarily a winger, Kiril Despodov would be joining the likes of Albert Adomah, Anwar El Ghazi and Yannick Bolasie in the battle for a starting slot.

Whilst both El Ghazi and Bolasie are loan deals, the rumour is that Aston Villa are looking to secure a £5,000,000 deal for Despodov – attempting to avoid the issue of loan recalls that the club currently faces with England starlet Tammy Abraham.

Not only can Despodov play as a winger, he can play as a forward too – often as as a supporting striker – a role that Ross McCormack was initially purchased by the club to play in.

Aston Villa have had mixed luck with signing Bulgarian players in the past – with club icon Stiliyan Petrov hailing from Montana, Bulgaria starting over 170 games for the club.  On the other hand, there’s Aleksandar Tonev – who just about managed six starts for the Villans and 11 appearances from the bench.

The Villa face stiff competition for the highly-rated attacker, with Sky Bet Championship promotion rivals Middlesbrough also interested, and Premier League outfit Cardiff also said to be watching the player closely.
