Jed Steer has signed a contract extension with Aston Villa which will see him stay at the club until 2023.
When the goalkeeper rejoined Aston Villa from his loan spell at Charlton Athletic last season, he had just a few short months remaining on his deal, before signing an extension that would keep him at the club until the summer of 2020.
Injuries Orjan Nyland and Lovre Kalinic saw Steer take his chance and the former Norwich goalkeeper never looked likely to lose his spot in the squad as the side went on a record-breaking unbeaten run.
The 26-year-old made 19 appearances from January until the end of the season, making crucial stops in the Play-Off Semi Final legs, including the two penalties saved at the start of the shoot-out.
Steer is one of the longest serving members of the squad having been on the books since 2013, and will be looking to fight for his spot and remain injury free during the next four years, especially if the club decide to purchase a new goalkeeper.
This could, of course, highlight the fact that there is no interest in another goalkeeper. We’ll have to wait and see.
“To be in the position I’m in now, signing a new deal and being a Premier League player – it’s something I didn’t expect last August.
I couldn’t have dreamt my season to have gone as it did. The saves, the penalties, that was the hard work we’d been putting in.“
Couldn’t be happier for the guy Come on Jed mate
