Per Matt Maher of the Express and Star, Aston Villa are set to make a formal bid for Southampton left-back Matt Targett in the coming days as they look to shore up their defence ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
The 23-year-old is rated at around £7,500,000 – but the bid is expected to be a little larger than this and will likely sit at around £8,000,000. The bid is likely to need to be closer to 10 or 12 million to be accepted, however.
It is unknown whether the bid will be accepted due to interest in Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand, and reports stating that the Saints may want Targett to become their new first choice left-back.
Matt Targett played in 20 games for Southampton last season, impressing both the bosses and fans at the club.
Whilst he is not necessarily the finished article, he’s a young, raw talent that could certainly be moulded into a Dean Smith player.
During the 17/18 season, Targett spent much of his time on loan at Fulham and was an important part of their Promotion push that season playing behind young defender-turned-winger Ryan Sessengon. Targett averaged a 7.20 average rating across 20 games that season, and picked up four Man of the Match awards.
Expect more news about Targett to follow, but in a sellers market, it’s likely the bid could be rejected.
