Douglas Luiz has signed for Aston Villa, pending international clearance, and becomes Dean Smith’s tenth signing this summer.

The Brazil Under 23 captain has impressed at a number of tournaments in recent years, and enjoyed a spell at Spanish outfit Girona last season that was hampered slightly by injuries.

Highly rated by Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City midfielder has been unable to play for The Citizens due to Work Permit issues, but with assurances that he will appear in 80% of Aston Villa’s fixtures, with obvious exceptions for injury, he is likely to receive one at Villa Park.

It is thought the deal holds a buy-back option for Manchester City, where if the Defensive Midfielder impresses, he will be allowed to re-sign for the Premier League Champions – with Aston Villa making a profit on the player.

The deal could of course fall through should Douglas Luiz not be awarded his permit – but rest assured that the likelihood of this happening is relatively low.

Speaking to Aston Villa’s media team, the midfielder hopes he can become a leader, and expressed:

“I hope I can be a leader in the team. I hope I can help by bringing the ball out from the back and, although I don’t speak a lot of English, I hope I can help out by shouting orders from the back and live up to all the expectations as best as I can.

“I hope we have a great season and win a lot of games.

“Right now I’m confident in saying that, God willing, I can shine in the Premier League.

“So I hope I cannot just talk the talk but also walk the walk and that’s my main aim.

“I came here to learn but, more than anything, to dream big and to be a leader on the pitch.”
