Social media has been aghast of late at news that Aston Villa are looking to sign a ‘marquee’ player who has been referred to on corners of the internet as the ‘mystery French striker’.
According to La Liga commentator and a well-sourced Sevilla blogger who has been correct on a number of occasions regarding their transfers this summer, Aston Villa have tabled a €32,000,000 bid on Sevilla forward Wissam Ben Yedder.
The 28-year-old French international would smash Aston Villa’s transfer record, broken earlier this window for Brazilian forward Wesley Moraes.
Ben Yedder is supposedly seeking new challenges according to French sources, with his agent stating that he will have to make ‘unpopular decisions in Seville’. Other French sources, namely L’Equipe, state that the forward has rejected a lucrative offer from the Chinese Super League as he wants to continue for a place in the national team by remaining in a competitive league.
Monaco are strong favourites to sign the 5ft 5 forward and are thought to have tabled a bid of €20,000,000 and winger Rony Lopes – but with the striker’s release clause at €40,000,000 – it’s likely that a deal to see the forward move to Monaco or Aston Villa could go down to the wire. This is where the confirmation of Jean-Kevin Augstin being a back-up option has come from.
The €32,000,000 bid will not be enough to activate Ben Yedder’s release clause, yet if the player would like the move, player-power has pull – especially on deadline day.
