Fresh off the back of a 4-0 win against Charlton Athletic Women, the Aston Villa Women are top of the league in the FA Women’s Championship.
Fierce competitors Durham have slid into third after a 1-0 loss against Blackburn Rovers Ladies – and a three-point lead against second placed Sheffield United Women leaves fans with no doubt that Villa have been stellar through the first five games of the league campaign.
Leading the charge is Melissa Johnson with her unreal form, with Johnson scoring her third hat-trick of the season against Charlton, in turn giving her ten goals to her name this term.
Winning their games is one thing, but staying the course for the first five opening games is impressive.
Johnson said of her recent individual form and the teams:
“It feels really good to have scored ten goals this season now.”
“The girls have been playing well, linking up with me and pretty much putting it on a plate for me, so it’s been really good. I’ve been really enjoying it.”
“Each week we’re improving and trying to play better football. We’re happy that we got the points but we’ve still got a lot to work on and we’ll take that into next week.”
“In terms of the goals for the season, everyone knows what we’re thinking and what we want to do – but we’ve got to take it game by game. We need to keep winning and keep focusing.”
And whilst Johnson seems to have her shooting boots on in each league game, it is truly a team effort for Gemma Davies’ side.
New addition Emma Follis is proving she is a force to be reckoned with, and Sophie Haywood is also showing what she can bring to the team with her tireless work and flair.
Haywood made a beautiful back-heel assist for Johnson’s first goal against Charlton, an assist that would lift any football fanatic off of their seat.
Solid teamwork and cohesion between the more veteran Villa ladies and the new arrivals from the summer seems to have happened seamlessly.
The Aston Villa Women are back home at Boldmere St. Michaels for their next Continental Cup contest against Sheffield United Women on October 19th.
