Aston Villa Women hosted London City Lionesses at Boldmere St. Michaels this afternoon for their final game of 2019, as they looked to be league leaders over the Christmas period.
It didn’t start the way that the home side would have wanted; with Mason cutting through the Aston Villa defence before slotting coolly past Sian Rogers in goal.
Emma Follis tried to get the Villans back into the game a minute later with a shot that trickled wide. Her second attempt was enough – no third needed – just four minutes later, as Amy West broke into an attacking position before squaring for Follis to bury at the back post.
Aston Villa Women had a penalty just after the 20-minute mark, which Marisa Ewers stepped up to take – firing low and hard – but her attempt was saved.
Emily Syme doubled the lead for the league leaders in the 26th minute, as a shot from 25 yards out looped over the keeper with the help of a dodgy deflection.
The home side closed out the first half the more dominant of the two sides with a half volley from Amy West that was saved exceptionally by the London City ‘keeper.
The second half started with Aston Villa remaining the dominant side, as Melissa Johnson nearly added to her 2019 tally, but her curling effort was tipped just wide of the post by ‘keeper Thomas.
London City Lionesses could have evened the score ten minutes into the half as a free-kick thundered back from the crossbar. This then resulted in a ten minute period of dominance from the away side, with Villa lucky that shots were just not finding the back of the net for London City.
Marisa Ewers made up for her penalty miss in the first half in the 75th minute as she hammered a shot into the top corner from long range to extend the home side’s lead.
This result makes it 11 games unbeaten for the Aston Villa Women in the FA Women’s Championship, as well as a Continental Cup quarter-final. What a way to close out 2019!
