Gemma Davies has today completed her second summer signing ahead of the Women’s Super League season, in the form of 35-year-old defender Anita Asante from Chelsea.
The centre-back, who has enjoyed an illustrious career playing for the likes of Chelsea, FC Rosengard and a number of clubs ion America including Chicago Red Stars and Washington Freedom, joins after her contract expired last month.
Asante has played 70 times for the England Women’s team, making her debut over 15 years ago. She has also represented Great Britain during the 2012 London Olympics – appearing in all four games before Team GB was knocked out by Canada.
Speaking to club media, Anita has revealed that she is hoping to help Aston Villa Women continue to grow their standing in the Women’s game.
“It’s great top be joining a Championship winning side who played brilliantly throughout the season.
They’ve shown the desire to win and build on the legacy of the club.
I’m delighted to be a part of the next step in the club’s journey.”
With over 18 trophies under her belt, Anita Asante is vastly experienced and has a close relationship with the club’s sporting director, Eniola Aluko. Both appeared for Chelsea and Sky Blue FC, as well as for the England national team.
“One of the best things about this move is what I can contribute due to my experience, towards growing the legacy of this club.
I can bring leadership, a level-headed temperament and support the young players coming through and push them to fulfil their potential.”
With such a young core to the squad with those retained from the Championship winning season, it is important to balance the fresher legs of the likes of Jodie Hutton with an experienced stalwart like Anita Asante.
Speaking to the club, Head Coach Gemma Davies is happy to have secured Asante’s signing.
“Anita’s on the ball ability lends itself superbly to a modern day centre-half – happy to play in tight spaces, under pressure and play creative passes between lines.
This is what a centre-half at Aston Villa looks like.”
With the release of Jade Richards earlier this summer, it’s a possibility that Anita could be paired with Elisha N’Dow during pre-season.
Welcome to the club, Anita!
