As we’ve reached the end of the Aston Villa Women season and are close to the end of the men’s campaign, it’s time for awards season, as we at Under A Gaslit Lamp celebrate the best players, the biggest moments and more in the world of the Villans.

Women’s Young Player of the Year: Freya Gregory

Our Women’s Young Player of the Year is none other than Freya Gregory, one of two players this season to make the step up from academy level, sign a professional contract and join the senior squad.

The 18-year-old made her debut in Aston Villa Women’s 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur Women and appeared in games against Arsenal and Brighton amongst others.

The youngster, who also represented Birmingham City at youth level, is an Aston Villa fan and showed as much when she scored her first goal for the club against our Second City Rivals. Her celebration sent waves through the Aston Villa Women fanbase, with her obvious passion on show.

Capped at England U-17 level, left-winger Gregory was called up to the Senior Squad earlier this year before putting pen to paper on her first professional deal.

Former Sporting Director Eniola Aluko said of Freya:

“Freya is a young and exciting talent that has demonstrated a consistent level of development and excellence in our academy.

“We’re excited for Freya to be an important player for the future progress of Aston Villa Women.

“She is a great example of the club’s evolving academy pathway, and we look forward to seeing her progression within the first team.”

Congratulations, Freya! We can’t wait to see what is yet to come in claret and blue.
