As we’ve reached the end of the Aston Villa Women season and are close to the end of the men’s campaign, it’s time for awards season, as we at Under A Gaslit Lamp celebrate the best players, the biggest moments and more in the world of the Villans.
Goal of the Year: Bertrand Traore
Our Goal of the Year award deservedly goes to Bertrand Traore, who blessed Aston Villa fans with the sublime on a number of occasions this season.
The Burkina-Faso international just doesn’t do tap-ins, with a number of the goals in his debut season being thunderous screamers, technical marvels or lucky world-beaters.
This goal, however, was our favourite.
At the Hawthorns earlier this season, Bertrand Traore found himself with two men between him and the goal as Ollie Watkins raced to underlap the winger and provide support out wide.
Traore fakes to his right, before cutting onto his favoured left foot and weaving into space between the two defenders that were blocking his route to the goal.
The Burkinabe star placed his shot with sheer arrogance into the bottom left-corner, without power, without venom, but with absolute finesse. Ice cold finishing that left Sam Johnstone stranded.
It could have been any of Traore’s goals, but this one was just divine.
Congratulations, Bertie!
