As we’ve reached the end of the Aston Villa Women season and are close to the end of the men’s campaign, it’s time for awards season, as we at Under A Gaslit Lamp celebrate the best players, the biggest moments and more in the world of the Villans.
Player of the Year: Matt Targett
Our Player of the Year award goes to Matt Targett, who showed incredible personal improvement across the season and managed to play in all of Aston Villa’s Premier League games.
The left-back has improved massively since last season, leading a number of fans to question Targett’s omission from Gareth Southgate’s EURO 2020 squad.
He has been a part of a relatively stable defence across this season, which will have helped our Signing of the Year award winner Emiliano Martinez pick up a number of clean sheets this season.
Matt Targett was awarded Players’ Player of the Year this season by his team-mates, showcasing just how much the left-back has improved in his time at the club.
In his first season at the club, the defender was called out for shying away from challenges and a handful of mistakes, but this season has been completely different. Targett stood firm against every challenge he faced, and kept some of the strongest, fastest and most technical wingers in the world quiet.
Targett has been a defensive stalwart this season, and thoroughly deserved the Player of the Season award.
Keep it up, Matt!
