Aston Villa have today revealed their new 2021/22 third kit, inspired heavily by the iconic club crest, adorning the Villa lion since the club’s foundation in 1874.

It features a navy base colour, and contrasted lion claw marks across the front and back of the shirt in a slightly lighter, purple colour. Visually, it looks somewhat similar to the third kit’s goalkeeper kit from last season, worn by Emiliano Martinez – but the smart thought behind the design of that last kit is lost in a somewhat disappointing nod towards the lion.

As with other kits this year, the lion is printed centrally on the back collar.

On the inserts of the back panel, the sleeves and the collar, as well as the club crest, Kappa logo and the sponsor Cazoo, you’ll find the colour ‘fresh celadon green’ – a colour linked with principal sponsor Cazoo – which rounds out the colour palette with the kit.

Both the pro version and the replica version, most often adorned by fans, feature a 3D silicon badge – something the club have evidently been pushing since the success of the LUKE kits in the club’s promotion-winning season. The detail in the badge on this kit, sat upon what looks like a slightly different material to the rest of the kit, is a saving grace.

The pro version, worn by the players on the pitch, features the Kombat™ Pro System technology from Kappa, providing ultra-resistant, elastic and breathable material within the main fabric, as well as a fully stretchable bottom part of the sleeves.

Cazoo once again features on all three kits this year, meaning that young Villans are once again to able to wear the same shirt as their heroes, something that has been missing in past years.

Promotional material for the club’s launch video and photography features Matty Cash and Emiliano Buendia, as well as heavy featuring of the Aston Villa Women side akin to last year’s home kit launch. Shania Hayles, Ramona Petzelsberger and Instagram superstar Alisha Lehmann are joined by a number of models and top UK football freestyle Mo Omar in the launch visuals.

After record demand for this season’s home kit and away kit, the club’s third kit is available in a wide range of sizes and editions.

Fans can upload a photo of themselves wearing the kit to social media along with the hashtag #WeAreVilla – and as a result will appear on the AVFC Digital Fan Wall, displayed on the club’s official website and the big screens at Villa Park.

The new kit has caused a stir amongst the fanbase on social media, with some fans not a fan of the blue tones of the kit – likening it to a strip from Second City rivals Birmingham City. Others are fans, but are already looking forward to next season’s kits, who will be made and designed by a new manufacturer.
